In this lab the kids have been shown a few different schemes for optimizing their search grid for battleship (although we did it where they were hiding objects and playing search and find not battleship). To make enough search and find grids for the kids we created our own grids and printed them out, then laminated them. We then used washable markers and dry erase markers in order to allow the kids to play multiple games using the same game board. For the younger kids you can create a huge search and find grid on a wall white board and have the kids each take turns to guess where your items are hidden, then I would use a specific search pattern to look for their items and see who finds all the items in the shortest amount of time.
